Witness the northern lights!
Churchill is one of the best places on earth to see the aurora borealis
Located directly beneath the auroral oval, Churchill is one of the most consistent destinations to witness the awe-inspiring northern lights. Long, dark winter nights provide the perfect setting for aurora borealis viewing, and the crisp cold air reduces condensation, providing more frequent clear skies.
For those seeking to chase the northern lights, Churchill is a destination that offers some of the best odds of catching the celestial display.

“We had a fantastic time in Churchill and got to see lights all three nights. The best lights were during our Dan’s Diner experience. It was over the top. Dog sledding was a must. It was great to meet such happy dogs. And I got to snow shoe for the first time. It was easier than I expected. This means I did not trip no fall. All in all, there is not anyway to improve the itinerary. It was perfect. ”

If I had not come here I swear people of this quality do not exist. I am from the south USA (Nashville, TN) and have always though we were friendly and hospitable but nothing compares to Churchill and its residents.”

Churchill is a premier Northern Lights viewing location due to being located directly beneath the auroral oval. This geographic advantage provides the community of Churchill with approximately 300 nights of aurora activity each year.
The auroral oval expands and contracts, meaning that on nights with high levels of solar activity, the aurora borealis can be seen further south. So there are some nights when you are lucky enough to see the northern lights in places that aren't really that north. In November of 2025, for example, there were reported sightings thousands of kilometres south of Churchill. However, on nights when the oval is not as large, being directly below means that you are still able to see the awe-inspiring light shows.
Winter elevates these viewing opportunities even further, with longer and darker nights providing an ideal backdrop, and the cold temperatures create a semi-arid environment that keeps the skies crisp and clear of clouds and moisture. Finally, being positioned directly beneath the auroral oval creates a breathtaking 'domed effect,' allowing you to witness powerfully vibrant lights dancing across the entire sky in all directions.
It really can be cold in Churchill, especially in the winter. Located in Canada's Subarctic, on the coast of Hudson Bay, the world's largest inland bay, Churchill in the wintertime becomes very cold. With temperatures reaching -30°C and the windchill making it feel even colder. As we like to say at Frontiers North Adventures, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad preparation". As your host, leave the preparation to us. Even if you own quality winter gear, you don't want to pack it, and if you don't you shouldn't need to buy it.
As part of our Northern Lights programming, Frontiers North Adventures offers a complimentary premium winter gear program. Equipped with Baffin boots made for arctic expeditions, and Canada Goose parkas and snow pants that are known for their quality, our guests enjoy the cold winter nights in comfort.

Dan’s Diner is a remote, one-of-a-kind pop-up restaurant located across the frozen Churchill River, away from the town's light pollution. Custom-built with panoramic windows and skylights, it is designed to give guests a spectacular view of the night sky directly beneath the auroral oval.
The experience includes:
- Tundra Buggy® Transport: Your evening begins by boarding a specialized, EV Tundra Buggy that safely transports you and an intimate group to an exclusive location across the frozen Churchill River and beside the backdrop of the boreal forest.
- Subarctic Fine Dining: You will be treated to a curated, multi-course menu (typically seven courses) prepared by an expert culinary team. The menu is inspired by the natural setting, featuring regional subarctic ingredients like foraged mushrooms, arctic char, elk, as well as locally picked ingredients such as cloudberries, blueberries, fireweed and spruce tips.
- Aurora Viewing: Of course, the meal is delightful and often does its best to steal the spotlight, but the experience is set far from the light pollution of town in a remote location, giving the perfect opportunity to step outside or look up through the skylights to watch the northern lights dance while you dine.
The Dan's Diner Culinary Experience is exclusive to Frontiers North Adventures and operates exclusively during the winter season (February and March). It is only available on our multi-day Northern Lights package tours, such as the Northern Lights and Winter Nights or Photo Adventure: Northern Lights adventures.
