Why We’re Celebrating Arctic Sea Ice Day (And Why You Should Too!)
July 15th marks Arctic Sea Ice Day, and we invite you to join us and our amazing allies at Polar Bears International in celebrating!
This special day is all about shining a spotlight on the critical importance of Arctic sea ice, understanding why it is declining, and discovering how each of us can take action to protect it.
Why Does Arctic Sea Ice Matter?
Right now, the Arctic is warming nearly four times as fast as the rest of the planet. This rapid climate change is causing crucial sea ice to melt at an alarming rate.
For polar bears, sea ice isn't just a scenic backdrop; it is their lifeline. Polar bears rely entirely on sea ice as a frozen platform to hunt their primary food source, seals. Without enough ice, their hunting season shrinks, making it incredibly difficult for them to support themselves and their cubs.
As the Arctic warms, polar bears in specific regions, like the Western Hudson Bay population (the famous Churchill bears) get significantly less time on the ice before they are forced back to land.
Our allies Polar Bears International, created Arctic Sea Ice Day to draw global attention to this critical issue, inspiring us all to do our part in preserving this fragile ecosystem and securing a future for polar bears.
The Arctic Ecosystem: More Than Just Polar Bears
While polar bears might be the first species that comes to mind when we picture the frozen north, they are far from the only ones who need the ice to survive.
1. Arctic Wildlife

Beautiful species like beluga whales, narwhals, and walruses have lives deeply intertwined with the sea ice cycle. Even the microscopic algae that grows beneath the ice plays a massive role, it is the foundational base for the entire Arctic food web.
2. Indigenous Communities
Human lives are tied to the ice, too. Northern Indigenous communities rely heavily on sea ice for cultural traditions, sustenance, and safe transportation.

3. The Global Climate
Even if you live thousands of miles away from the Arctic, sea ice directly impacts your daily life. It acts like the world’s air conditioner, reflecting the sun's rays back into space (known as the albedo effect) and keeping the entire planet at a stable temperature. When the ice disappears, the Earth absorbs more heat, disrupting global weather patterns.

How to Take Action for Polar Bear Conservation 🧊
Preserving the Arctic starts at home. You can make a real difference by reducing your carbon footprint, supporting renewable energy initiatives, and spreading the word about Arctic conservation.

- Tune into Polar Bears International's Beluga Boat for a live broadcasts to learn more about polar bears, beluga whales,, and Arctic sea ice right from the waters of the Churchill River.
25 Years of Alliance: Frontiers North Adventures & Polar Bears International

This year, Frontiers North Adventures and Polar Bears International are proud to celebrate 25 years of working together!
Since 2001, our two organizations have had an alliance working hand-in-hand with the best interests of polar bears at heart. Together, we focus on spreading awareness about the threats these iconic animals face, what they need to secure a successful future, and how every single person plays a vital role in helping them thrive.
This Arctic Sea Ice Day, we invite you to learn more about our 25-year alliance and discover how you can help protect protect the north.
