Established in 1979, the creation of the original Tundra Buggy sparked a new era of polar bear adventures in Churchill. Today, Frontiers North continues that pioneering spirit as a leader in wildlife tourism innovation—now focused on converting our Tundra Buggy fleet to electric vehicle technology. Our Tundra Buggies operate year-round, transporting guests for wildlife viewing on the tundra in autumn and summer, and across the frozen Churchill River in winter for northern lights viewing and snowshoeing.

  • “Our polar bear adventure with Frontiers North exceeded every expectation--starting with the fact that we were treated to more than twenty polar bear sightings, of at least 16 different individuals, over our two days on the tundra! We also saw ptarmigan, arctic hare, and red foxes. While animal sightings often come down to luck, almost every other wonderful aspect of our trip was only possible with the diligence, experience, and caring of everyone at Frontiers North. From our first moments on the ground in Winnipeg, we were impressed with the food and lodging choices, smooth movements between activities, and clear communication. We could not have asked for a better tour guide than Ward Cameron, who was attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about these bears and their lives. And we are still talking about how skillfully Markus piloted the tundra buggy to maximize our wildlife sightings! We also loved meeting and learning from the good people at Polar Bears International who are so committed to protecting these creatures. Though we explored staying in the Tundra Buggy Lodge, we ultimately opted to stay in Churchill, and we're glad we did. We did not feel we missed out on any polar bear sightings this way. Rather, we loved experiencing a bit of life in this special place (be sure to check out the Northern Store), and our accommodation (the Aurora Inn) was clean, warm, and comfortable. I would also note that we took advantage of Frontiers North's gear rental program. Though somewhat pricey, renting a parka, snow pants, and snow boots was still a better deal for us (Californians) than buying new gear we were unlikely to wear again. Gear pickup and dropoff in Winnipeg could not have been easier.”

  • “We had a fantastic time in Churchill and got to see lights all three nights. The best lights were during our Dan’s Diner experience. It was over the top. Dog sledding was a must. It was great to meet such happy dogs. And I got to snow shoe for the first time. It was easier than I expected. This means I did not trip no fall. All in all, there is not anyway to improve the itinerary. It was perfect. ”

  • Obviously the highlight was seeing the polar bears, but going around the town of Churchill was really nice and definitely worth being on the itinerary. We received outstanding hospitality and service from everyone we encountered - the drivers we had, the various servers for all our meals and the talks we were given. Everyone was just so friendly.

    The trip was magical!

  • “Thank you so much for the outstanding Bears, Blooms, Belugas trip from July 20-25. All of the accommodations and meals were top notch. The belugas brought tears to my eyes and to say my heart is full would be an understatement. More importantly is your incredible staff. Our guide, Ian, has got to be one of the nicest human beings on this earth! His kindness and patience are unmatched. Also, Ian’s knowledge is amazing. Danielle, from your Churchill office is fantastic. She is also kind, patient, friendly and very enthusiastic. Brendon drove the Tundra Buggy and he exhibited much kindness and patience too! Ian, Danielle, and Brendon each went above and beyond to accommodate everyone’s wishes. Absolutely amazing every minute! Thank you!!!!!”

  • “We went for the photo specialist tour at the start of November. We picked the dates after a careful review of when is the best time to see bears, and luckily this paid off and we saw lots of Polar Bears enjoying themselves in the cold weather. They are very curious animals, and great fun to watch. The Tundra Buggy Lodge is slightly different to your usual hotel with bunk beds and shared showers and toilets, but it is certainly the best way to live among the bears as some sleep right beside your window! The food and staff in the lodge were excellent, and wine was served with dinner. The only slight inconvenience was having to wait for a shower at peak times. Overall we had an excellent trip and the Arctic experience was certainly very memorable. Our driver Alex and guide Mike were both very professional and worked hard to make sure we were in the right place to see bears, foxes, ptarmigan, caribou and even a pine marten. It was certainly a very different and special experience. We can strongly recommend visiting the Tundra Buggy Lodge.”

  • “We just returned from a trip to Churchill with Frontiers North. We are avid travelers and were super impressed with the smooth operation that this company runs. Everything from hotel stays, transfers, flights, Tundra Buggy ride to food was very well executed. JP, our Buggy 13 driver was really informative and had a keen eye to spot the bears. We're very grateful that all our wishlist items were checked on the very first day. The Buggy was super comfortable with only 18 passengers. Our tour guide, Josh was very patient and answered all our questions. He and our shuttle driver, Jamie took us to see the spectacular Northern Lights in the freezing temperatures. Thank you for making our trip memorable.”
