Trip Overview

Board your nonstop charter* to Churchill, Manitoba to witness one of the seven natural wonders of the world!

Located directly beneath the auroral oval, this remote community of 900 people is regarded as one of the best places on Earth to experience the dazzling aurora borealis. Here, small tour groups make for an intimate and authentic northern lights experience, with exclusive access to Frontiers North’s Thanadelthur Lounge, the Dan's Diner culinary experience and snowshoe trekking in the boreal forest.

For the best aurora viewing and photography opportunities, we head far away from the lights of town to view the aurora borealis in all its glory from extraordinary locales, travelling to a new and secluded location each night. Imagine being able to step out onto the tundra and feel tiny against the never-ending sky, enveloping you in Mother Nature’s most spectacular light show.

Accompanied by a Frontiers North Interpretive Guide, our Subarctic Discovery: Churchill Northern Lights adventure offers a unique program in which travellers can fly direct* to Churchill, Manitoba to experience the dancing skies and the incredible culture of Canada's North.

*Airfare is between Calgary, Alberta-Churchill or Montréal, Québec-Churchill, as indicated.

*Due to the unpredictable nature of northern travel, your direct flight may be subject to refuelling or other stops.

Interpretive-Guided: Our most well-rounded adventures, these tours include lodging and transportation with a mix of cultural and wildlife or northern lights viewing activities built in. Interpretive-guided tours are medium-capacity, escorted departures so you can sit back and relax while we take care of all the details.

Day 01

Welcome

I arrived at my hotel for the night, I am so excited to go on my Subarctic Discovery: Churchill Northern Lights tour.

After checking in, I headed to an evening meet and greet held by our Interpretive Guide. This gave our group the chance to ask last minute questions and learn more about what our adventure holds. I am happy I booked a Frontiers North adventure, our Interpretive Guide is very knowledgeable.

Day 02

Churchill Adventure Begins

Today's the day! We board our early morning flight to Churchill, Manitoba. Upon arriving, we head out for a Churchill and area tour which comprises of a guided bus tour of local and historical points of interest surrounding Churchill, including the Polar Bear Holding Facility and Inukshuk.

After lunch we head over to the Parks Canada Visitor Centre to view detailed and exciting wildlife dioramas and fur trade exhibits. We leave chock-full of natural and historical information about the Churchill region!

This evening's dinner plans are something I've been looking forward to since booking the trip! We journey by official Tundra Buggy® across the frozen Churchill River to Dan’s Diner and experience regional cuisine in a pop-up restaurant, complete with skylights and panoramic windows for best northern lights-viewing opportunities.

After dinner, we again travel by Tundra Buggy to our next aurora-viewing location, Frontiers North's Thanadelthur Lounge. Here, we can view the northern lights from inside by peering out through the panoramic windows or we can climb onto the roof-top observation deck for an unobstructed view. We spend our late night hours viewing and photographing incredible images of the northern lights as they streak across the sky.

Day 03

Dog Sledding, Snowshoes and Northern Lights

In the morning I grab a quick breakfast from the lobby hotel before meeting the group. Today we’re going on a dog sledding excursion! Hosted by a local resident and dog sledding expert, we learn about Métis culture and the history of dog sledding in northern Canada.

After lunch, we feel the exhilaration of an afternoon interpretive snowshoeing adventure through Churchill’s boreal forest.

This evening we escape the lights of town for the final aurora borealis-viewing opportunity! Tonight we travel to a modern-style yurt tucked away in the boreal forest. The illuminated yurt and surrounding treetops can make for excellent northern lights photography — I'm so glad I brought my camera!

Day 04

Last Day in Churchill

Today is our last day in Churchill. After some free time we head over to the Itsanitaq Museum, which contains one of Canada’s finest collections of Inuit carvings, kayaks and artifacts dating from pre- Dorset, Dorset, Thule, and modern Inuit times.

After our final hours in Churchill, we return to the Churchill airport for our evening return flight. What an unforgettable experience this has been! I'm so grateful I got to see the northern lights in Churchill with the new friends I made along the way.
