Polar Bear Adventures

Lock eyes with wild polar bears!

Churchill is known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World

Each year, throughout October and November, hundreds of polar bears migrate back to Churchill, awaiting the return of the first sea ice on Hudson Bay. This annual migration offers some of the best opportunities in the world to observe wild polar bears.

Operating polar bear tours since 1987, Frontiers North Adventures is one of the most experienced tour operators in Churchill. Holding the majority of permits for the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, we provide our guests with unparalleled access to view wild polar bears in their natural habitat.

  • “I just had to write and say what a wonderful time I had (and sister Julie Riley) on the Tundra Buggy Lodge Tour (Saturday 21st October till Thursday 25th October Group 63). It all went very well. Of course the icing on the cake was seeing Polar Bears ( 6 on the first day with 2 being a mother and cub) Of course we appreciate that sightings of polar bears are dependent on the sea ice freezing which it was starting to do. Then followed by a super display of the Northern Lights--again there was not a high likelihood but it happened. Bryan our guide woke us so that we could go on the observation deck to get a stupendous view. I personally could hardly sleep afterwards and had to keep checking the view from my bed through the conveniently placed window. I have seen the Northern Lights in Iceland but only fleetingly--this was absolutely amazing. I have mentioned Bryan, our very knowledgable guide who was also great fun and was making sure that we were looked after and kept informed. I should also mention Bob, our driver who was also very knowledgeable. It was apparent that he was looking out for the mother and cub that had disappeared into the water when another bear approached them. We were not close ( it was explained that we could not leave the track) but again a great privilege.
All the Lodge staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. It was apparent that the staff work together like a family. I would also like to mention that the food was excellent and worthy of a first class restaurant. I would have no hesitation in recommending Frontiers North's trips to friends. My trip has made me much more aware of the situation facing the polar bears. I think that I need to save up for a photography trip next !”

  • “I have recently returned from Churchill on a tour led by Cole, Tour 31. I had been looking at this trip since 2019 and this has been my first holiday travelling abroad since COVID. I wanted to thank Cole and Luke for making my holiday an experience to remember. They were both very helpful, knowledgeable and ensured that every member of the tour was well looked after. With Cole offering to set up a shared file where members of the group can share their best pictures is something I have not come across before with a tour company and is very thoughtful. I look forward to this and wish to show my appreciation to them both.”

  • “Thank you very much for coordinating our Polar Bear tour 24 (Nov01 - Nov05) for my daughter Lei and me. Lei was excited at the large number of bears that we encountered (I think the number was over 50, according to one of our colleagues). This number was far greater than what we anticipated and resulted in our overwhelming satisfaction. In addition to the polar bear sightings, we were also highly satisfied with the following:
    - Frontiers North highly professional staff, who provided personal attention to each tour participant, including Alex - our interpretive guide, JP - our tundra buggy driver, and you - Ana.
    - Tundra Inn. Not fancy but comfortable
    - Restaurants - Ptarmigan + Tundra Pub: great food, friendly staff, comfortable environment
    - Food: food was great at all venues, including the tundra buggy lunches and the chartered plane flights
    - Hampton Inn Calgary - comfortable rooms + friendly staff
    - Logistics staff who coordinated my pre- and post- hotel stays at the Hampton Inn

Aside from the polar bear sightings (which was the purpose of this trip), the most important factor to me was the professional and friendly attitude of the Frontiers North staff that we encountered and who made this tour very memorable.”

  • “I want to give a big shout out to our amazing tour guide in Churchill, Duane!
Duane couldn’t do enough for us and was a wealth of knowledge, as well as hysterically funny!
We couldn’t have asked for a better trip. I will definitely recommend Frontiers North to anyone thinking of going to Churchill. We have memories to last a lifetime!”
